Global Governance Meets Local Land Tenure: International Codes of Conduct for Responsible Land Investments in Uganda

Throughout the last decade, international donor community has developed a plethora of regulatory initiatives for responsible agricultural investments. It remains unclear how such guidelines are invoked in practice investment cases, and whether their use can prevent conflict protect local land rights, as promoted. Uncovering work necessitates an understanding formal-legal setting underlying tenure regimes that shape projects. In Uganda, these contexts vary from region to investments take place on held under various regimes, including private, state-owned, customary land. Based 8 months fieldwork I compare three cases large-scale different settings argue variation systems determines variation, uneven applicability effectiveness global governance mechanisms.
